This used to be local policy at my first cataloging job, and it took me a while to unlearn it. Doing so is contrary to AACR, as you said. But even back then, we did it because it was helpful.

I don't recall that it's come up, in all the welter of other things we've been reconsidering under RDA, or whatever the future holds. It may be because it seems at first glance to be contrary to streamlining. But if it meets user needs, maybe we should talk about it.
