Re: Electronic Access to Haworth Press Journals Ginanni, Katy 22 Jul 2008 21:40 UTC

I doubt very much that the staff downsizing has anything to do with the
technical problems being experienced. I used to work for a large
subscription agent, and I can tell you that the difficulties in merging
two separately developed business systems -- and probably old ones from
the 1970s, at that -- can be enormous. I'm sure that applies to
content-hosting systems, too. And Taylor & Francis would have kept on
key technical staff.

I think that Joanne's effort to get a refund, rebate, subscription
extension or something like that from T&F is laudable, and may result in
good things for everyone who is experiencing problems. But I also think
that we should try to be patient with T&F. It is a reputable company,
and I bet that they are working hard to resolve access problems. I also
bet that their relative silence on the issue is an indication that they
are probably as frustrated as we are and don't yet have answers to
share!

Maybe staff downsizing has something to do with the problems with
Haworth publications.

The article below from pressconnects the online version of the
Binghamton (NY) Press newspaper :
http://www.pressconnects.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070918/NEWS01/
709180366/1002/BUSINESSBINGHAMTON -- The acquisition of The Haworth
Press Inc. by Taylor & Francis will result in local job losses and plant
closures after all.

The article is now archived and there is a fee to access.

>From the article :

About 170 [that is, all] workers in Binghamton [NY], Kirkwood [NY] and
West Hazelton, Pa., will lose their jobs between mid-November [2007]and
mid-March [2008] as Taylor & Francis consolidates the work to its other
locations, in such places as Philadelphia, New York City and Boca Raton,
Fla., Haworth Senior Vice President Roger Hall said.

>From a subsequent letter to the editor:

We have been offered only 10 jobs to which 170 employees can apply. Jobs
are not being transferred; Haworth is closing, and employees are being
laid off.

I have not. I received one response which is very similar to what was
posted below. I have also emailed three other people, and I have not
received a response asking about a refund and stating that the lack of
access was becoming a breach of contract. My vendor has contacted T&F
with our subscription list. T&F sent it to Haworth to verify that all
were activated. Haworth has been completely silent. I just checked
again, and I am still not even able to open the website let alone
download an article or check a subscription. If I don't receive a
response by the end of the week, I will contact our purchasing office
and see what options I have. I may also send a registered letter. I am
determined to pursue this issue.
Please let me know if anyone has any luck.

Thanks,

Tracey

My staff person emailed haworthpress@taylorandfrancis.com last Thursday
to ask when our Haworth journals would be activated, and to date, we
have had no response yet...

Anybody else out there having any luck with assistance from Taylor and
Francis yet?

Thanks,

Joanne

Dear Serialst,

Thank you for your messages regarding the Haworth Press site. Please be
assured that Taylor & Francis Group is actively supporting the Haworth
Press website for journals.

A transition plan is in place which is available at
www.informaworld.com/haworth. This plan will be updated with information

regarding the transition over the coming months, and we will send
regular communications to customers via email regarding the process. We
plan to dual host for a period to allow customers time to update their
catalogues, and to ensure the transition has minimal impact on library
users. To that end we are also in touch with link resolver vendors to
ensure their knowledgebases are appropriately updated.

We are aware that the Haworth Press site at times runs very slowly and
will continue to work to improve performance on the site in the interim.

Anyone needing assistance with the haworthpress site can contact
haworthpress@taylorandfrancis.com. We have extra staff allocated to
help librarians with any issues.

If you have any subscription related queries our customer service team
are on hand to assist and can be contacted at tf.enquiries@informa.com.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let me know if I can be of
further assistance.

Kindest regards,

Meg
