Social Sciences Data and Economics Librarian

Reporting to the Head, Information, Research, and Instructional Services
(IRIS), this
position serves as the resource specialist for data resources in the
social sciences
(excluding business) and also serves as the economics subject librarian,
providing
reference/research assistance and instruction for these areas.
Librarians in the IRIS
Department provide a variety of services including reference desk,
virtual reference
services, research consultation, and instruction, and are responsible
for much of the
collection development for the social sciences. This position will play
an important role
in promoting and raising awareness of data services and strengthening
the data
component of reference services across the Libraries.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
As the social sciences data librarian, s/he works with a team of
librarians in a variety of
subject areas to support students and faculty in identifying,
evaluating, managing, and
using numeric and spatial data; offers in-library consultation,
instruction, and outreach
services to university faculty and students with needs for data
resources; works with the
Data Manager, Social Sciences Infrastructure, in the College of Arts and
Letters; trains
and assists staff in providing reference assistance for data materials;
continually
evaluates the department’s reference collection of social science data
resources to
ensure that holdings meet user needs; collaborates with the library’s
technology staff to
meet technology needs for data services; provides a perspective on
digital preservation
and archiving of data; shares responsibility for providing quality
reference/research
services at the department’s reference desk, including evening and
weekend hours,
and for providing library instruction to individuals, groups, and classes.
As the economics subject librarian, s/he is responsible for all aspects
of collection
management and development for economics, including selection of information
resources, faculty liaison, research consultation, and instruction.
Serves as the liaison
to the Economics & Econometrics and Economics & Policy Studies
Departments. S/he
will also serve as the coordinator of a team of social sciences
librarians, a role which
rotates among the team.
As a member of the library faculty, s/he participates on library and
university
committees and teams which examine complex issues and develop innovative
services,
including the data services team, the social sciences librarians team,
and the
Institutional Digital Repository group. S/he is expected to contribute
to the profession
through professional leadership and/or scholarship and to engage in
continuing
professional growth and development.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: MLS from an ALA-accredited institution; familiarity with
numeric data
resources and with current issues, technologies, and software
applications related to
such resources; capability to identify, access, and use data resources;
highly motivated
self-starter who can work cooperatively and effectively with all levels
of staff and users
in an ever-changing environment; demonstrated commitment to providing
quality
reference service; ability to work in a team environment and build
working relationships
with campus colleagues. Candidates should have excellent communication and
interpersonal skills.
Other qualifications include an awareness of current trends and emerging
technologies
in the delivery of data services in an academic library, experience in
providing
reference services in an academic library and demonstrated teaching or
presentation
skills.
Preferred: Experience in the use of geospatial and /or statistical data
files in a
research environment; proficiency with social sciences statistical
packages and
software such as SPSS; academic background in a social sciences discipline;
experience with social sciences collection development.
SALARY AND BENEFITS: Salary and rank offered commensurate with
experience and
qualifications (minimum salary of $40,000). Librarians are non-tenure
track members of
the faculty and earn 20 days vacation annually, plus University holidays
including the
week between Christmas and New Year’s Day. The University offers an
