Re: freely accessible journals (coordinated project anyone?) Belvadi, Melissa 13 Nov 2007 22:00 UTC

Hello, all. Folks lately have been posting links to various lists of
freely accessible periodicals here and there, but I haven't been able to
find a single site that is attempting to provide a list that is:
1. comprehensive - all publishers, sources etc. (DOAJ, Highwire, PubMed
Central, PLoS, BMC, etc.)
2. current - up to date information, or at least within a few months
(e.g. someone mentioned a link to a list that hadn't been updated since
2003)
3. downloadable in machine-useable (e.g. Excel, .csv, etc.) format
rather than just human-readable html etc.

I want this because I manage my own openurl server and would like to be
able to load (and refresh) this data for our patrons.

Does anyone know of such a site?

Failing that, would anyone be willing to participate with me in
maintaining such a site? I have already done some preliminary work using
Zoho (nice easy web-based interface for sharing data), and I would
handle doing all of the techie stuff, big uploads, etc., but there's
just no way I can personally monitor all of the other sites to manage
the data on an ongoing basis, so I'd need a bunch of volunteers willing
to occasionally update the data on individual titles, add a few as they
find them, etc.

Obviously I don't want to reinvent the wheel, so if someone else is
already doing this somewhere, please let me know about it!

I proposed something like this about a year or so ago at a techie
librarians' conference and got just a few responses then, but if I can
get a critical mass of participation in helping maintain the data, I'd
be happy to provide the technical skills and coordination to make it a
reality.

Or, if anyone has any tips as to how I might apply for a grant to
actually fund this project, I'd love to hear about that option, too.
I've never had anything to do with grants before.
