Date: 10/12/07 6:41 PM

Advancements in technology, economics, competition, and culture continue
to transform the operations of scholarly publishing. And the challenges
and opportunities related to open-access publishing, institutional
repositories, electronic-workflows, pricing and licensing grow
increasingly complex.
Registration is now available for the SSP Fall 2007 Educational Seminar
Series. The meetings will be held Monday, November 12 through Wednesday,
November 14 at the American Geophysical Union in Washington, DC.
Join your colleagues and a range of industry speakers to take part in
thought-provoking discussions:

*Opportunities for Publishers in a World of Institutional Repositories
Monday, Nov. 12 (full day) Are IRs a threat to publishing business
models? Or are they an opportunity for publishers to discover new
material, create virtual communities, and enrich their books and
journals? This session will examine digital repositories with specific
focus on the opportunities they offer to all types of organizations.

*Technology Blitz: A Practical Update on the Next Generation Technology
Tuesday, Nov. 13 (am) Learn about the latest technology trends from
industry leaders and hear real-world case studies from publishers now
utilizing the next generation of technology. Hot topics: Web
2.0/collaborative technologies, anti-plagiarism detection, and search
engine optimization.

*Changing Workflows in Book Production
Tuesday, Nov. 13 (pm)
Front-end versus back-end XML? Which output formats for full-text
e-Books? This practice-oriented seminar will help you navigate the
dizzying variety of production challenges presented by new workflows.

*New Business Models for New (and Gently Used) Content Wednesday, Nov.
14 (am) Do value-added features add revenue? Can aggregating and
mashing create wholly new products? Will print advertising dollars move
online? This session will explore how a broad range of educational,
commercial, and scholarly publishers are capturing the "long tail" of
their markets with innovative business models.

*Innovations in Pricing and Licensing
Wednesday, Nov. 14 (pm)
Publishers are changing their relationships with institutional
subscribers by virtue of new pricing models and licensing techniques.
This session presents a variety of novel approaches being applied by
scholarly publishers - from SERU to value-based pricing to open access
models.
