Lilah -
We do not check in the two newspapers we get daily (and never have). In addition, we have stopped checking in a few selected titles that we keep only temporarily - the New Yorker, Chronicle of higher education, London review of books and a few others.
There's been no downside to it at all. These are titles that our patrons just go to look for - they don't look in the catalog to see recent receipts. Items get to the shelves quicker, our patrons are happy, and we waste no time checking in and un-checking in when we discard.

Subject: [SERIALST] Daily check ins
All,
Does everyone check in daily newspapers or is it common practice to not
do so? I recall people talking on this list about not checking in any
periodicals at all, but I would rather hear from someone who does check
things in but has made a decision to not check in certain titles due to
the daily chore.
Thanks!
Lilah
