Project MUSE is looking for a Metadata Librarian/Indexer. You can apply through the online form at: <https://hrnt.jhu.edu/jhujobs/job_view.cfm?view_req_id=30793>. General Description: The Project MUSE Metadata Librarian/Indexer position offers an opportunity for a service oriented, knowledgeable professional cataloging librarian with strong communication skills to provide original descriptive metadata and indexing of the articles in Project MUSE, a leading online journals product sold to over 1200 libraries throughout the world. The metadata and indexing comprise the basis for search and retrieval in the database and serve as a key distinguishing feature of this product in the library market. The incumbent must be able to apply expert library knowledge and skills to the management of information in a non-traditional, dynamic electronic publishing setting. Responsibilities: • Analyzes and creates metadata for articles in a wide variety of subject areas through applying knowledge of both scholarly and user needs and relevant national standards such as Library of Congress name authority work and subject headings. • Develops subject headings for new concepts and topics and submits headings to the national thesaurus at the Library of Congress. • Collaborates with the Indexing Coordinator/Chief Metadata Librarian and other Metadata staff in developing policies/procedures/workflows and planning for emerging standards and practices. • Oversees creation and maintenance of authority records and the resolution of post indexing authority problems including conflicts with name, subject, and uniform title headings in the Project MUSE metadata database system. • Participates in or manages special metadata projects such as the creation of MARC21 serial cataloging record sets for loading into integrated library systems of MUSE subscribers. • May supervise student positions and may participate in product development for features utilizing descriptive metadata. This position requires a strong service orientation. The position must internalize Project MUSE’s mission of serving the needs of scholars and users in order to provide descriptive metadata and indexing that adheres not just to high quality standards but also provides a successful user experience of the product. The metadata and indexing serve as the underpinning for search and retrieval as well as establishing links to MUSE in other products; the metadata, therefore, serves the purpose of helping to drive traffic to Project MUSE articles both within the MUSE interface and from external resources, ensuring success of the product in the library marketplace. In addition to the service within the Press, this position is required to demonstrate a commitment to professional development and growth in both the library and publishing professions. This position benefits from a certain amount of creativity applied over a small spectrum of projects but usually does not require the conception and design of major new projects. As a professional librarian, this position functions 100% of the time in an administrative / technical professional role and contributes to the organization through advanced knowledge, skill and expertise. Qualifications: ALA-accredited MLS degree. • Minimum one year’s original cataloging experience, preferably including authority experience and the construction of subject headings using LC subject cataloging rules. • Knowledge of current and emerging national cataloging standards (e.g., AACR2r, MARC21, Library of Congress Classification, LSCH, RDA, FAST, FRBR) and familiarity with metadata standards and practices (e.g., Dublin Core, TEI, Onix, OAI-PMH). • Knowledge of online cataloging management procedures and techniques. • Ability to write and implement procedures. • Experience with national bibliographic utilities, preferably OCLC, and with integrated information or library management systems. • Reading knowledge of two or more foreign languages, preferably Western European. This position requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work independently and as part of a team. The position works with peer staff, production staff, marketing staff, and technical staff. The position also may train support staff and students and must have excellent training skills. The position requires strong analytical and problem-solving skills. The Metadata Librarian/Indexer alone is responsible for resolving problems encountered routinely and must exercise a significant amount of independent judgment. The position may also resolve problems encountered by other librarians as well as the support staff and students Preferred Qualifications: . Second masters or graduate work in a humanities or social sciences field. • Familiarity with humanities and social sciences scholarship. • Knowledge of HTML and XML. • SACO experience. • Familiarity with NACO procedures. • Project management experience. • Familiarity with electronic publishing. • Experience working with faculty and other users in a library setting. • Ability to prioritize work to ensure that production deadlines and goals are realized.
