Director, Center for Information Processing

Southern Methodist University

Southern Methodist University (SMU) seeks an innovative, experienced
librarian to lead the Center for Information Processing (CIP) of its
Central University Libraries (CUL).  The Director of the CIP serves as a
member of the senior management team and is responsible for the
management of the division, which includes cataloging, acquisitions,
physical processing, and general supplies purchasing.   As a member of
the executive council, the Director shares in setting the vision and
policies for the delivery of library services to the entire SMU
community.  The Director articulates the vision and direction of the CIP
for CUL and university strategic planning processes.  Overseeing the
management of approximately 24 staff in a team-based work environment,
the Director of the CIP ensures consistency and effectiveness of
services to meet the needs of a changing technological environment.

With a collection of over 2.1 million volumes, acquisitions expenditures
of $3.5 million dollars, and an annual operating budget of over $8
million, the CUL includes libraries encompassing the humanities, social
sciences, sciences and engineering, as well as the DeGolyer Library of
Special Collections.  The CUL serves the undergraduate and graduate
populations of SMU.

Qualifications:
ALA accredited master's Degree in Library and Information Science plus
at least 5 years progressively responsible experience, preferably in
technical processing within an academic library.  Proven experience in
managing operations and supervising staff. Excellent organizational,
project management, and communication skills.  Familiarity with library
outsourcing opportunities; ability to develop innovative solutions and
think creatively on behalf of library constituents.  Understanding of
cataloging, acquisitions, and processing operations and the ability to
supervise staff responsible for these areas.  Advanced knowledge of
AACRII rules, MARC 21 standards, and metadata schemas; significant
integrated library systems and bibliographic utilities experience.
