                                                 POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

ASSISTANT HEAD OF SERIALS SERVICES - The Linda Hall Library of Science,
Engineering and Technology.  The library is a privately supported
independent research library open to the public, serving a worldwide
clientele.  Services are provided to local, national and international
academic, business, technical, and individual users.   A distinguished
collection of library materials supports research in physical sciences,
life sciences, engineering and technology.  Expansion of services and
programs to the business and research community provides challenges and
exceptional opportunities for flexible and dedicated staff.

Responsibilities: Assist Head of Serials Services with day-to-day
management activities and supervision of five full-time paraprofessional
staff. Manage and coordinate additions and changes to Horizon automated
serials system records and compile collection growth and processing
statistics.  Function as support to Reference Services, Document
Services, and other public services by locating materials and
interpreting bibliographic records for staff and patrons. Participate in
long-range planning.

Working conditions:  This position operates in a normal library
environment.  Routine duties require use of a computer 85% of the time,
and involve overhead reaching to return or remove volumes from shelves
and maneuvering book trucks.

Qualifications: ALA accredited degree in Library and Information
Management with minimum of two years successful, broad serials
experience. Knowledge of current and innovative views regarding serials
procedures and practices, including acquisitions and bibliographic
control.  Skilled in use of a national bibliographic utility, preferably
OCLC; operation of an automated serials control system; and ability to
work with foreign publications. Excellent organizational, interpersonal
and communication skills. Ability to interact successfully with staff on
all levels in a team-based environment. Initiative and flexibility to
respond effectively to changing needs and priorities in a dynamic
environment. Exhibit management potential. Supervisory experience
desirable.
