Description:
This four-week online workshop is designed for practicing catalogers from all
types of libraries who have a working knowledge of the MARC21 bibliographic
format and AACR2. The course provides guidance to catalogers who may be
responsible for cataloging integrating resources of all types, with an emphasis
on remote access electronic integrating resources. The workshop covers AACR2
cataloging rules from chapters 9 and 12 and the recent implementation of
Bibliographic Level code i in OCLC. The sessions include an introduction to
integrating resources and their identification, instructions for originally
cataloging updating Web sites and databases, making changes to existing
records, and case studies covering more difficult aspects of cataloging
electronic integrating resources.
SCCTP:
This workshop is part of the Library of Congress Serials Cataloging Cooperative
Training Program (SCCTP), which provides standardized training materials and
trained trainers in the field of continuing resources. For further information,
see: http://www.loc.gov/acq/conser/scctp/
Online learning:
This is an asynchronous type of online learning workshop. Participants will
receive a password to a workshop web site, which includes content documents,
discussion forums, and an area for submitting exercises. Interaction with the
instructor and other participants takes place through listserv-like discussion
forums internal to the course web site. There will be no real-time sessions
during which everyone must be online at the same time. The workshop will be
structured into units with a set of deadlines for submitting exercises once or
twice per week. Within that framework participants may work through the
content at whatever pace, location, and time of day they wish. Discussion of
content and exercises is ongoing throughout the four weeks. After exercises
have been submitted, the instructor will provide feedback on them. The
workshop should take participants approximately 4-6 hours per week. Upon
completion of the workshop, each person will receive a certificate in PDF
format for printing. See also: Are you ready for online learning?:
