Hi Kathryn.
We use Sirsi to check in papers, and we don't barcode them. Many of the
newspapers we receive have irregular enumeration, and with some of the
worst offenders, we've been generating predictions by date only, and not
enumeration.
We also film most of the newspapers we receive (we aim to film all
Alaska newspapers, and we also receive film for several national
papers). We typically retain papers either until we receive film for
the same time period, or in the case of papers that are not filmed, for
several months. For the papers that we do retain on film, here is an
example of how we typically enter holdings:
Current: Most recently received issue is on display. Previous issues
shelved in stacks. (or just Current: Most recently received issue is in
stacks.)
Retained: Paper retained until replaced by microfilm. V. 66 No. 43
(2007:Mar 1)-
Film: 1940:Aug 1- 2007:Feb 28.
Hope that helps!

I would be very interested in knowing how you process newspapers at your
library. Do you check in. & if so, what system does your library use
(e.g.
SIRSI, etc.)
If you do NOT check in, how do you keep track of your holdings?
Anything
else you care to share would be appreciated.
