We use EZProxy to handle all of our security access for online
resources.  The software has to be purchased but once in place, it's
wonderful.  Our IT guys simply add the URLS you provide for the
databases into the EZProxy index and it then automatically opens a login
window anytime someone clicks on a link.  The user
(faculty/staff/student) logs in with their university login (or other if
you prefer) and you don't have to worry about keeping up with passwords
anymore.

but I have no earthly idea how they do it.  Maybe you can chat with your

IT folks and see if they could do something like that?
