Re: Barcoding periodicals Laura Vogler 04 Jun 2007 11:06 UTC

We are currently in the process of barcoding our bound volumes and we are
doing this with the aid of our student workers.  There are several
reasons we have decided to take on this project - we have the help, for
use statistics, we have decided to allow a 48 hour check-out.  It
will also allow me to keep closer track of what we have in our
collection.

We are about 2,000 volumes into a 20,000 volume
collection and we started last August using one student.  I am not in
a hurry so don't feel compelled to complete this enormous project right
away.  I figure if we just start chipping away at it it will get done
eventually.  We shelve our volumes in alpha order.  We are not
currently barcoding current unbound issues and anything we keep for a
limited time (such as all of our JSTOR titles).  I will address those
issues in the future.

Regards,
Laura

: With some trepidation I ask about advantages or disadvantages of

: embarking on a project to barcode and give item ids and possibly
spine
: labels to our periodical collection, which currently is
simply shelved
: in alpha order with no tracking capabilities. My
sense is that
: statistics would be useful but I'm not sure the
impact of such a project
: is worth that one asset?
:
Appreciate experiences or advice for those who have considered or moved

: in that direction. Unless others are interested, you can reply
directly
: to me.
: Many thanks.
