CATALOGING COORDINATOR
Sam Houston State University
Founded in 1879, Sam Houston State University is a major regional center of
higher education with 500 faculty offering five doctoral and 48 master's
programs, and a full complement of undergraduate degrees. Located 50 miles
north of Houston via interstate highway, historic Huntsville offers a
reasonable cost of living with no state income tax, and the ease of small
city life with major cultural, sports, and entertainment venues nearby.
National forests, golf courses, lakes, and the Huntsville State Park offer
excellent recreational opportunities, while the proximity of Bush
Intercontinental Airport provides convenient access to air travel. Dallas,
Austin, and Galveston are each within three hours driving distance.
The large, rolling campus of Sam Houston State University provides a diverse
student body of 16,000 students from 46 countries with an excellent library
and attractive facilities. The library contains more than 1.3 million
volumes of materials in all formats, subscribes to over 7,000 print and
electronic periodicals, provides access to a full range of online databases,
and is a selective depository for federal and state documents. The library
website, located at http://library.shsu.edu, provides access to the SIRSI
Unicorn integrated library system and other library resources. Sixteen
librarians, twenty-nine staff, and numerous student assistants provide
services and instruction.
The six librarians and eleven staff of the Technical Services Department are
responsible for collection management, acquisitions, cataloging,
preservation, electronic resources, and digital projects. The library's
materials/electronic resources budget is over $1.8 million which includes
$500,000 annually for the purchase of new books. Professional cataloging
responsibilities will be distributed between the Cataloging Coordinator and
the newly-created position of Serials Cataloger. The cataloging unit uses
a vendor for authority control.
Duties: Coordinate cataloging unit activities; train and supervise 3.5
staff. Identify/resolve bibliographic and holdings problems for monographs
and non-serial formats; provide original cataloging as needed.
Twelve-month, tenure-track position with faculty rank and status; reports to
the Assistant Director for Technical/Collection Services. Required:
ALA-accredited master's degree; professional experience cataloging
monographs using OCLC, LCCN, LCSH, and AACR2; supervisory/management
experience. Desirable: Academic library background, experience with various
bibliographic formats (music), authority control, and metadata; ability to
maintain an integrated bibliographic database; additional advanced degree.
Salary: minimum $47,500 with benefits package.
