Exciting opportunity to help build a state-of-the-art acquisitions
operation at the largest university library system in the Washington

RESPONSIBILITIES: Within a team environment, responsible for planning,
developing and managing all aspects of procuring library material
(annual budget of $8+ million) for UM College Park Libraries, plus
electronic resources for Maryland Digital Library and University System
of Maryland and Affiliated Institutions. To accomplish this goal,
manages and leads acquisition production group with teams for ordering,
continuing resources and business. Resolves complex acquisitions and
serials problems and applies knowledge of current issues and trends in
acquisitions, scholarly communications and the publishing industry to
improve services. Serves as member of Technical Services’ Leadership
and Planning Team.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE: Master’s degree in library science from
ALA-accredited graduate program or equivalent professional degree and
relevant library acquisitions experience. Five years of relevant,
progressively responsible professional experience in mid- to large-size
academic or research library, with at least two managing an acquisitions
unit. Extensive experience with automated acquisitions systems and
automated library systems in an academic research library. Thorough
knowledge of technical services. In-depth knowledge of acquisitions and
serials issues and an awareness of emerging trends. Thorough knowledge
of vendor negotiations, scholarly communication, publishing trends, book
and subscription trade. Familiarity with basic accounting principles.
Demonstrated managerial, supervisory and leadership skills. Ability to
create and manage organizational change and to lead in a team-based
organization. Demonstrated skills in vendor relations and negotiations.
Competence in bibliographic and acquisitions data management, as well
as spreadsheet packages and desktop tools. Excellent interpersonal and
communication skills. Demonstrated record of professional contribution.
