FACULTY OPENING Serials Cataloging Coordinator The University of Virginia Library seeks a creative and innovative leader who will help to shape the future of the Library’s cataloging and metadata endeavors in a dynamic and changing environment. The Serials Cataloging Coordinator will coordinate and supervise the cataloging of serials in all formats and oversee periodicals check-in and claiming. The Cataloging Services Department is located in Alderman Library and is the central cataloging area for most of the materials added to the University Library collections. Staff create and maintain original and copy cataloging and holdings records in MARC for various formats (print and electronic monographs and serials, microforms, maps, video and sound recordings, web materials), as well as perform cataloging in non-MARC databases using other appropriate metadata standards. Departmental planning and management is coordinated by the Cataloging Supervisory Team. Responsibilities: Reporting to the Head of Cataloging Services, the Serials Cataloging Coordinator coordinates and supervises the cataloging and ongoing database maintenance of serials in all formats (print, electronic, and microforms) and all types (general collections, government documents, and special collections) and periodicals check-in and claiming. Takes leadership in implementing diverse approaches to providing bibliographic access to serials, including appropriate links within the Library’s various access tools: the Library’s ILS (VIRGO), the link resolver (Find@UVA), the (soon to be implemented) Electronic Resources Management System, and the Library’s non-MARC databases for digital collections. Coordinates the cataloging activities for serial materials Library-wide, directly supervises three staff, and serves as a liaison to the Health Sciences Library, the Law Library, and the Library of the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration. Develops standards, procedures and documentation, and provides staff training. Monitors national trends, serves as a resource person for departmental staff, and participates in Library-wide discussions to provide best access to our serial collections. Oversees the functioning of the SIRSI serials module and manages the EDI workflows. Prepares original cataloging records and edits complex OCLC copy, using the MARC formats, AACR2, Library of Congress subject headings and Library of Congress classification schedules. When appropriate, prepares authority records and contributes headings to Name Authorities Cooperative Project (NACO) following established guidelines and standards. Qualifications: Required: Master's degree in library/information science or related field; demonstrated experience with serials cataloging, AACR2, LCRI, MARC formats, LCSH, and automated library systems; supervisory experience; effective organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills; project management skills; and the ability to work flexibly in a rapidly changing environment; strong customer service orientation; knowledge of current trends and developments in serials and serials management; commitment to professional growth and development. Preferred: Ability to work with foreign languages; experience with link resolvers and electronic resource management systems; familiarity with non-MARC metadata standards (TEI, EAD, Dublin Core, etc.).
