Head of Cataloging Services

(Senior Librarian)

The University of Texas at Dallas, Eugene McDermott Library

THE UNIVERSITY:  The University of Texas at Dallas is a doctoral-level,
state supported component of The University of Texas System located in
suburban Richardson, with an enrollment of over 14,000 students and 300
faculty members.  Nationally recognized for its programs in the sciences
and electrical/electronic engineering, management science, and brain and
behavioral sciences, the University also provides imaginative
interdisciplinary programs in the social sciences and the humanities.

THE LIBRARY:  The Libraries of the University of Texas at Dallas consist
of over 1,000,000 printed volumes, 37,000 periodical subscriptions in
paper or electronic format, 350,000 electronic books, 200 databases, and
nearly 2 million microform units.  The Libraries employ over 80 people,
including twenty five professionals.  McDermott Library is an active
participant in Amigos Library Services, TexShare, and the UT System
Digital Library program.  In addition, McDermott Library is a federal and
Texas state government documents depository.  For more information about

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:  The Library seeks a creative, future-oriented
individual, who is experienced in managing the workflow of a monographic
print cataloging unit in a dynamically changing academic library.  The
Manager sets priorities, allocates resources, and develops plans,
policies, and practices within the Unit and supervises 4 employees,
including 2 professional librarians, 1 copy cataloger, and 1 library
assistant.  This individual reports to the Associate Director for
Technical Services and works closely with the Head of Electronic Resources
and the Head of Materials Acquisition to enhance the access and use of all
library resources.  The successful candidate must have a working knowledge
of current cataloging standards, practices and formats.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:  MLS from an ALA accredited institution.  Five years cataloging
experience in an academic library with increasing supervisory experience.
Mastery of cataloging rules, standards and practices.  Qualified
applicants must be skilled in training employees in OCLC, MARC, LCSH, and
LC classification.  Experience in manipulating and bulk loading vendor
supplied bibliographic records.  Commitment to enhancing services through
teamwork and responsiveness to all library customers.  Excellent written
and verbal communication skills.  A record of professional contribution in
library science.

Preferred:  Experience using Endeavor's Voyager cataloging module, working
knowledge of one foreign language.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Competitive salary commensurate with education and
experience for a 12-month administrative/professional appointment.
