Re: Elsevier - ScienceDirect College Editions STEVE BLACK@FACULTY@ACADEMICAFFAIRS 08 Sep 2006 18:36 UTC

I don't have direct experience with the College Editions, but it sounds
like Elsevier is offering similar terms to smaller colleges subscribing
independently to the terms they offer members of consortia. My library
has <$50K in Elsevier subscriptions, but we get access to most of their
journals as a participant in the Pi Squared consortium. The price we pay
sounds comparable to the prices mentioned for the College Collections.

Laura, you could ask your Elsevier rep if indeed the idea is to offer
similar terms to colleges not in a consortium. I'd be interested in
their response, if you could let me know off list.

Hi Linda,

Yes, the collections are for smaller institutions, and $50,000 doesn't
go far with Elsevier journals, so it's a very limited market. We were
disappointed when we learned of the limited eligibility, since it's not
obvious on the web site.

I wonder if anyone else out there will sign up for this?

Jennifer,

According to the documentation we have, Elsevier's College
Collections have no relation to your print subscriptions,
(except maybe the collections are only available for
smaller institutions); and you can cancel at will. Our
rep said "we were hoping the pricing model would be
attractive enough that folks wouldn't feel the need to
cancel." However, we are cancelling a few titles in order
to purchase one of the collections.
