Pam,

Here are the guidelines that we have for routing periodicals. Anyone
that works in the library can put their name on a routing slip so they
can see the issue each time it comes in. After I check in a journal that
is to be routed, I attach a routing slip with whoever wanted to see the
issue. I have a note at the bottom of the slip that says to keep "ONE
DAY ONLY" (knowing that they probably will keep the issue a day or two
longer). I also have a list of all the issues that are routed and who
gets them, so if that issue is not back by the following week, I put out
a general email that whoever might still have the issue, will return it,
and if that does not work within 24 hours, I hunt the issue down. For
the most part, by doing this procedure, we usually don't have very much
trouble getting the issues back to bind, which we bind every three
weeks, because of having so many journals in our medical library.

I hope that I have been of some help. Have a nice day. Alice

Does anyone have guidelines on routing periodical issues? Who can, who
can't? Time frame for reviewing? I'm finding that at our library
issues don't always find their way to the reading room resulting in
purchasing replacement copies. Suggestions?

Thanks,
Pam

We "allow" 3 days per reader, but we also have a few well-known "slow
readers" on our staff. If you don't already know who is sitting on
routed periodicals, try asking everyone to date the routing slip with
the date they received it, next to their initials. Folks at the end of
the route will be only to glad to record that they received the January
issue in July. There will be some fudging of dates, but you will pick up
the pattern in not too long.

Before you try to ban folks from the lists, you can try putting them at
end of the lists. One of our slow readers shaped up after she realized
she was causing so much trouble. Others continue to need reminders.
Another tack we have taken with some titles is to route only the TOC.

Good luck,

We stopped routing journals a number of years ago. Issues would get
buried on people's desk and sometimes lost. But the real problem was that
journals would be hard for find and unavailable to users for months after
arrival.
