Re: Print retained or discarded?

Ahoy, Carroll -
We're debating this, too. Factors for us are the stability of the electronic platforms (maybe aggregators is the better word) for electronic items and the desirability of actually owning something (either in print or in microfilm) even if available electronically and even if access is guaranteed to something once one no longer subscribes. What troubles me is that no platform/aggregator is completely safe because titles come and go depending upon contractual arrangements with a publisher, something that can change at any time. We like the idea of JSTOR, but just do not have the money to belong and won't have any for the short-term future.
Can you get your faculty to review their holdings and remove subscriptions and back runs of titles that no longer fit your curriculum? Is off-site storage (either by RMC itself or in cooperation with another institution) an option? Can you convert titles to microfilm? Is compact shelving in your new location feasible, at least in part?
Just a few quick thoughts on the matter. Good luck with the project!

We are in the process of moving and space is at a premium. One suggestion
has been to discard all print holdings of titles we now recieve
electronically. I would appreciate hearing how other libraries are handling
their holdings, in particular Science/Engineering journals.
Thank you.
