SICI Codes Julie Moore 10 Mar 2006 20:16 UTC

Dear Colleagues,

We are in the process of writing an RFP for a new ILS. I am attempting to
write the the serials section with a workgroup. There are a couple of
statements on the Open RFP that deal with SICI codes. I have researched SICI
codes a bit, but I still am not sure exactly how to use them. We obviously
do not use the SICI codes here. I am just wondering if this is something
that we *should* be moving toward (or at least keeping the door open) or
not. (Are choices are to mark each statement as "important" or "desireable"
or "not desireable".

The statements are:
1. Serials can distinguish between Library barcodes and SICI barcodes.
2. Serials can utilize SICI barcode scannin for checkin.

and later on in the section, there is another statement:

Serials maintains updated order information for title changes made by
publishers. (The question came to mind is how does the system know about
title changed? Does the SICI barcode somehow tell you that?)

Thanks kindly and please forgive my ignorance on this topic,

Julie Moore
