Revised posting HEAD, ACQUISITIONS DEPARTMENT The University of California, Irvine Libraries are seeking a dynamic leader to join an enthusiastic staff in building a research library of excellence for a young and rapidly-growing university ranked nationally in the top universities. The Head, Acquisitions Department will work in a collaborative environment of evolving institutional expectations and will manage growth and change to assure that high quality continues to be achieved. Duties and Responsibilities The successful candidate will play a key role in leading innovation in the Acquisitions Department and will, with energy, imagination and the effective utilization of technologies, lead the Acquisitions Department in the prompt and cost effective procurement and management of all collection materials for the UCI Libraries. The Head, Acquisitions is responsible for all operations and services of the department, supervising its work-flows in searching, ordering, receiving and copy cataloging new materials, claiming, negotiating licenses and managing access for electronic resources, developing management reports, managing special projects, and continually updating processes and procedures for efficiency. As a member of the Library Council, the incumbent participates in library-wide planning and policy making. The Head, Acquisitions has overall responsibility for personnel management within the Department and will build expertise within the department through staff training and professional development. S/he manages all departmental budgets; provides appropriate collection management support including accurately encumbering funds, invoicing receipts, reconciling expenditures and generating financial reports; and establishes good vendor relations, monitoring their performance and implementing new vendor offerings as appropriate. Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Technical Services, the Head, Acquisitions Department position ensures excellent communication and cooperation across departments and divisions and works collaboratively with UC colleagues system wide in consortial resource sharing initiatives. The incumbent is a member of the Technical Services Management Group and participates on other divisional and library-wide teams and committees as appropriate and is expected to work comfortably and with excellence in a shared decision-making environment. Qualifications Required: * Graduate degree in library science from an ALA-accredited library school or equivalent combination of education and experience * Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible acquisitions experience in academic or research library setting * Minimum of 2 years successful supervisory experience * Knowledge of electronic resource management and licensing issues * Demonstrated management and organizational skills * Demonstrated ability to think analytically and solve problems * Demonstrated skills in vendor relations and negotiations * Excellent knowledge of acquisitions principles, processes and systems * Skill to adapt to change and balance work priorities in a fast paced environment * Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships and to interact diplomatically with staff, vendors and customers * Demonstrated effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills * Demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging trends in academic library services and resources * Ability to meet criteria for Associate Librarian or Librarian rank Desired: * Experience in a consortial purchasing environment * Working knowledge of basic cataloging * Working knowledge of the Innovative Interfaces ILS Acquisitions and Serials Modules The Acquisitions Department The Acquisitions Department procures all collections materials for the UCI Libraries, which includes the Langson Library, the Science Library and the Grunigen Medical Library. The Department is responsible for expending a materials budget of over $7 million annually. The Department comprises the Department Head, 1 librarian, 15 staff and student assistants. The Libraries The UCI Libraries are committed to innovation and excellence and are in a major period of growth and change. The Libraries consist of the Langson Library, the Science Library, the Gateway Study Center, and the Grunigen Medical Library. The Langson Library primarily serves the Schools of Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences, Social Ecology, Business, the Department of Education, and Interdisciplinary Studies. The Science Library primarily serves the School of Medicine and the Schools of Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, Engineering, and Information and Computer Sciences. The Grunigen Medical Library serves the UCI Medical Center, located in Orange, 12 miles from the main campus. The UCI Libraries have a staff of 273 FTE and an organizational structure that includes the use of teams in conjunction with departments. The library collection consists of over 2.3 million volumes and over 25,000 current serial titles and an aggressively expanding electronic resources collection. They are entitled to two days per month of annual leave, one day per month sick leave, reductions in incidental fees, and all other perquisites granted to non-faculty academic personnel. The University has an excellent retirement system and sponsors a variety of group life and health insurance plans. Benefits are equal to approximately 40% of salary. Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. Preferred appointment level: $43,860 - $78,396 (Associate Librarian I – Librarian III) plus annual administrative stipend of $4200.
