MARC Record Service Workflows Patrick L. Carr 01 Mar 2006 17:02 UTC

Mississippi State University Libraries recently implemented Ex Libris'
MARC record service, MARCit. We ultimately decided to configure our
implementation using a combined record approach. In other words, instead
of loading into the catalog records for the electronic versions of
journals already held in print, the print records were modified to
reflect the online access that users have to these titles.

We are currently preparing to carryout the first of our monthly updates
using the MARC record service and have received a lengthy report
generated by our Systems Department indicating the records that the
service wants to add, modify, and delete during the update. We are
having difficulty establishing workflows for controlling what records we
do and do not want the service to modify and delete; for example, we
would not want to delete from the catalog a record for a journal in
which we have recently lost online access--and accordingly MARCit wants
to delete from the catalog--but which we maintain print holdings.

Are there other libraries out there that followed a similiar approach
when implementing a MARC record service and could provide input
concerning how they handle workflows for controlling what records they
do and do not want the service to modify and delete; please contact me
directly at pcarr@library.msstate.edu

Thanks!

Patrick
