This actually came up during a panel discussion at the Charleston
Conference.  One of the panel speakers was advocating the elimination of
serial check-in as a way to free staff for other tasks.  There were a
number of participants however who quickly noted that check-in was
required for auditing purposes.

I realize the call was for off-list replies, but would be interested in
some follow-up.

When we discussed ending routine check-in at University of Kansas
Libraries several years ago, one reason we decided not to was because of
our use of item record creation at check-in (we have Voyager).  In the
years since we switched to Voyager from a home-grown serials system, we
discovered that inexperienced staff frequently mislink item records to
the wrong bib and holdings for serials that have been through one or
more title changes.  Assuming we've set up check-in correctly, that's at
least not a problem with recent receipts.  We may reconsider this at
some point (the UNR news sparked some valuable thought and talk here).
