NOTICE OF PROFESSIONAL POSITION VACANCY
ELECTRONIC RESOURCES AND SERIALS CATALOGING LIBRARIAN
The University of Pennsylvania Library seeks a dynamic, creative and
forward-thinking professional to assume responsibility for managing the
cataloging of electronic resources and serials.
Reporting to the Head of the Original Cataloging Department, a unit of
the Information Processing Center, the Electronic Resources and Serials
Cataloging Librarian performs and oversees the cataloging of electronic
resources and serials for all campus libraries (except Law), including
Special Collections; and, in cooperation with the Electronic
Acquisitions and Serials Departments, works to provide and improve
access to journals in all formats.
The successful candidate should demonstrate excellent communication and
interpersonal skills, collegiality, and initiative; be able to flourish
in a high-intensity work environment; and value the diversity of the
library’s users and staff.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Electronic Resources and Serials Cataloging Librarian performs
cataloging of serials in all formats, languages, subjects, and levels of
difficulty; works closely with the heads of the Electronic Acquisitions
and Serials Departments to manage the bibliographic control of both
electronic and print serials; supervises one high-level paraprofessional
and assists the same in problem solving; evaluates and disseminates
information on innovations and emerging technologies concerning access
to electronic resources and serials; explores trends and develops
procedures for the use of non-MARC metadata; consults widely to provide
effective access to electronic resources and serials for a diverse
clientele; and provides leadership by representing the library in local
and national organizations relating to electronic resources and serials.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
* MLS from an ALA-accredited school, or the equivalent in skills and
experience.
* Knowledge of standards for the bibliographic control of electronic
resources and serials, as well as authority control.
* Familiarity with trends in the field of electronic resources and
serials cataloging.
Preferred:
* Related experience in an academic library.
* Familiarity with metadata standards and trends.
* Reading knowledge of at least one European language and facility in
working with other western languages.
* Supervisory experience.
* Evidence of strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and service
orientation.
* Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team
in a dynamic environment.
* Ongoing commitment to professional development and growth.
