We have used xenu to check serials. The secret to using it was
extracting the files from our catalog with a report and then running
them through a "mail2text" program that kept the "links alive".  I
haven't run it for quite some time.

We spent some time hunting to find the right programs to get it to
work. (So you might have to invest some time rather than money).
It is fast and does work. However,  it only shows the links work, not
that they are going to the correct location!
