Re: Electronic database and journal cost increase information

If anyone has a good source on database price increases please send to the
list.
For electronic journals purchased as e-only subscriptions, I believe the
standard subscription price increase predictions done by the subscription
agents are as good as any other standard. Now that most publishers have
already moved to a print + online =5-20% more than print or electronic
alone, we aren't seeing the wild swings that we did a year or two ago when
several large publishers moved away from the print + free online.
Databases are much harder to predict. In some cases there is product
inflation (ie, lots more content like backfile indexing, more international
titles covered etc.) along with "general" inflation. Also, many vendors
negotiate individual prices with libraries so there is no standard "list"
price. We have used a 9% increase as an estimate. Unfortunately we don't
see a 9% increase in the budget to cover this. :-)
I believe the Library Materials Price Index committee in ALCTS has
struggled to find a model to analyze database pricing.
