Re: Free serials not linked to print subscription Tian Zhang 09 Dec 2005 16:59 UTC

Our library just adds the free serials (usually by adding the database,
such as DOAJ) to our A-Z list of Ejournals managed by Serials Solutions.
Recently, we cataloged our electronic journals by loading the Marc
Records from the A-Z list. By doing so, the free journal titles are also
in our OPAC now.

We did not check each of the titles to see whether it has print version
in our collection or not. Actually, we do not care that if we never
owned that title before.

Subject: [SERIALST] Free serials not linked to print subscription

Hi everyone,

I know this is a perpetual question, so I apologize in advance if this
has come up on the list recently. I couldn't bring up any relevant
threads in the archives.

We are reviewing our policy for adding free resources to our collection
and making them accessible through lists, the catalog or other means.
One category we're reviewing are free magazines or journals that are not
associated with a print subscription. The content of these resources
will be evaluated just as we evaluate other resources, but we are
interested in how other libraries make these sites available if it is
determined that the content justifies adding the journal to the
collection.

In this case, do you add it to an alphabetical or subject journal list,
do you catalog it, or do you make it available some other way? Any
suggestions you can give us would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Pat
