We use Houchen Bindery and they have bought binderies in Lousiana
and Missouri. They have proved to be very helpful and flexible with
turnaround time (and a large rush-order we had this past semester).
Here is their website. If you have any specific questions about
their software, I have used both ABLE and LARS and would be happy
to assist in whatever way I can.

Do any of you use Heckman Bindery? We do, and I know a few other
libraries that do on another listserv. I was wondering if any of
you who use them are having a problem with them? We have always
had good service from them, but they have had our last order since
August. I know of a few other libraries who they have held orders
for since June.
This is very unusual compared to the good service we have had from
in the past. Do any of you have recommendations for binderies in
the southeast part of the country?

Thank you.
Jean

How unusual. We use National Bindery out of Georgia. We're very
happy with their service. Ask for Jack Tolbert. They use the online
ABLE bindery prep program and it's great; we do it all online.

Hi Jean,

We have used Heckman since 1987 and until recently the delivery
service was fairly good.

After speaking with our new customer service representative, I
understand the delivery problem is due, at least in part, to a
major backlog in Production that was caused by several changes in
their manufacturing system.

We received our September shipment via UPS, but they will not be
picking up any of our material until January. At that time, they
hope to be back on schedule.

It is my understanding that libraries may request UPS or Roadway
delivery or pickup. However, please check with your representative
before doing so. Roadway, we discovered, needs equipment we do not
have in order to make a delivery. And we have chosen not to
entrust Special Collections to anyone other than our Heckman driver.

Although our state contract will allow us to use a small bindery
in Shreveport, Louisiana, we have decided to stay with Heckman for
the time being.

If anyone knows what else may be happening at Heckman, everyone
here would love to know about it.

					Good luck,

My current library does not use Heckman. However, in my previous
experiences with them, they were very responsive and customer
service oriented. They do have reputation for high quality work.
My first question would be whether you have talked with your
Heckman representative to get an explanation of why materials have
not been delivered as expected
and what you learned from that conversation. As with any vendor,
librarians and binders both benefit from open conversation about
expectations and the occasional problems that arise. Changing
binders is a costly proposition for a library. I would always try
to work with my current binder before considering a change.

We were with Heckman since about August of this year. We had
nothing but trouble from the first. Some of our books were sent to
a library in Colorado. Several of the books were not bound
correctly. Some had the wrong information on the spine. We just
went back to our old bindery, Northwest Library Bindery (part of
ICI Group) and we are very happy with them.
