Twelve month appointment. Reporting Structure: Reports to the Dean of University Libraries. Rank and Salary: Assistant Professor or Associate Professor. Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor depending on qualifications. Salary and rank commensurate with qualifications and experience, minimum $50,000 per year. Description: The University Libraries seeks an experienced, dynamic, and innovative librarian to provide leadership and direction for the operation and management of the Cataloging Department. His/her responsibilities include planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating programs and services that enhance bibliographic access to the collections and resources of the University Libraries. He/she works with other department heads to facilitate communication and working relationships between his/her department and others. He/she supervises departmental faculty and staff and establishes departmental goals and objectives in keeping with those of the University Libraries. He/she provides leadership in resource management and allocation for the department. He/she participates in the libraries' collection development program and serves as subject liaison to assigned department(s). Responsibilities: The successful applicant will manage the day-to-day operations and activities of the Cataloging Department; supervise faculty and staff of the department; represent the department on the Libraries' Administrative Council and other appropriate groups; represent the libraries with local and regional groups addressing issues related to Cataloging; prepare management reports related to the services, resources, and activities of the department; develop and implement mechanisms for evaluating the effectiveness and efficiency of the work of the department; provide leadership in planning and implementing programs and services to meet the needs of those who rely on the expertise of the department; provide leadership in providing and/or promoting opportunities for ongoing training and development for the staff of the department; provide leadership in taking advantage of the capabilities of the integrated library system and other available technologies to maximize the effectiveness of the department and the management of its workflow. He/she will participate in faculty governance and provide input into library decision-making. He/she will provide leadership for external projects based in the Cataloging Department including the Library of Congress NACO Funnel project and the Cooperative Cataloging Council for our ILS partnering libraries. He/she will be expected to stay abreast of current trends and best practices in areas of responsibility and takes steps necessary to integrate these into the University Libraries as appropriate. He/she will be expected to maintain and document a program of research, professional involvement, and continual learning that promotes his/her own professional growth and development and contributes toward the achievement of the libraries' organizational mission. Required Qualifications: ALA accredited MLS degree and appropriate relevant work experience. Second graduate degree is required for tenure and promotion. Experience working with a variety of computer based resources in support of cataloging. Knowledge of AACR2R, LCR1, LCSH, MARC formats, LC Classification, and OCLC. Experience with using an automated library system to accurately catalog library materials. Ability to effectively supervise and evaluate the work of others. Good oral and written communication skills. Excellent interpersonal skills. Must be a self-starter and able to work independently as well as a part of a team in a collegial environment. Must be able to assume responsibility and accomplish goals. Evidence of potential to maintain an ongoing program of professional involvement and development at a level that would merit tenure and promotion. Ability to work effectively with a highly diverse group of faculty, staff, students, and coworkers in a courteous and professional manner. Must have good problem solving skills and exercise sound judgment in dealing with a variety of issues.
