510 field in serial records Linda Dausch 18 Aug 2005 20:03 UTC

When I come across serial records that are 10+ (pre-Internet) in our
OPAC, I notice that we have often added 510 notes concerning where the
serial has been indexed. In serial records in OCLC, I rarely encounter
this field being used for the periodicals we receive. Do catalogers
still make the effort to see where the serial has been indexed or has
the ease of using the Internet or aggregated periodical databases
rendered this field little-used now? This can be a time-consuming
endeavor (finding out where a serial has been indexed and for what time
periods) and I wonder if it is worth doing now in our more ephemeral
electronic world.
