This position is located in: Shields Library, Catalog Department and is not

This External position is for UCD/UCDHS employees and the general public.

This position will serve as Monographs Cataloging Assistant Supervisor at
the Library Assistant III-spv. ($2425.00 - $3641.67/month) or Library
Assistant IV-spv. ($2691.67 - $4041.67/month) level based upon
qualifications. The General Library consists of the Peter J. Shields
Library, the Carlson Health Sciences Library and the Physical Sciences &
Engineering Library in Davis, and the Medical Center Library in Sacramento.

Responsibilities: Under general direction of the Section Head, this position
is responsible for daily operational management of the Copy Cataloging/Post
Cataloging Unit; supervising, training and evaluating staff; overseeing
distribution and copy cataloging of newly received materials; database
management, processing and labeling of cataloged materials. Designs and
coordinates special projects. Evaluates departmental automation needs.
Catalogs monographs in English and Roman alphabet foreign languages.
Resolves discrepancies and problems.

Requirements: Knowledge of academic cataloging functions and procedures.
Demonstrated skill in using a variety of online databases, e.g. MELVYL
catalog, or other online catalog, to do bibliographic searching, to use as a
classification and subject verification tool, and to interpret data in order
to resolve problems. Knowledge of an integrated library system and its
catalog module to provide analytical and operational support. Experience
using Internet, email, word processing and spreadsheet software. Excellent
verbal and written communication skills to provide clear and concise
information and instructions, correspondence and performance appraisals.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AT THE LIBRARY ASSISTANT III-SUP. LEVEL: Knowledge
of the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, LC Rule Interpretations, and LC
Classification Schedules. Knowledge of LC subject headings and LCAF
authority structure to search, identify, verify name and subject headings,
to resolve discrepancies as appropriate and to determine the basic subject
content in order evaluate headings. Working knowledge of MARC21 Format for
Holdings Data, Holdings Statements for Bibliographic Items (ANSI/NISO
Z39.71) and local holdings procedures preferred. Knowledge of a modern
European language to provide copy cataloging of the material and to do
bibliographic searching and editing. ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AT THE
LIBRARY ASSISTANT IV-SUP. LEVEL: Strong leadership and operational
management experience. Ability to exercise independent judgment to solve
problems and make appropriate decisions. Ability to evaluate plans, needs
and procedures for multiple workflows. Skill in appraising, organizing, and
prioritizing the workload of the unit to meet the needs of the department
while maintaining high standards for quality and quantity of production.
Skill in analyzing existing policies and work flows to make recommendations
for changes or improvement, or to correct any problems that may exist.
Working knowledge of the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, LC Rule

name and subject headings, to resolve discrepancies as appropriate and to
determine the basic subject content in order to assign or evaluate headings.
Working knowledge of a modern European language to provide original
descriptive cataloging of the material and to do bibliographic searching and
editing. Working knowledge of a major bibliographic utility's computer
applications (e.g. OCLC CatME), and its interrelationship with the local
integrated library system and other bibliographic computer applications
(e.g. Melvyl), to implement efficient cataloging workflows and procedures
and resolve problems. Supplemental Requirements: Supplemental requirements
that must be provided by the final filing date: Clerical Supplemental Form
Required. Special Conditions of Employment: No smoking in building; no
eating or drinking in work area. Physical Requirements: Frequent lifting of
books and materials weighing up to 10 lbs. Operate keyboard and computer
equipment, interpreting small print (on computer screens and paper
documents) for extended periods of time.
