University of Maine: Cataloger/Metadata Librarian

Raymond H. Fogler Library, University of Maine is looking for individuals
with a mastery of traditional cataloging standards/practices for original
and complex copy cataloging but who are also willing to explore and apply
contemporary metadata schemes to organize and provide access to the
University of Maine’s increasingly digitized collections.  Reporting to
the Department Head for Technical Services, collaboration with others is
essential to define metadata needs and to implement solutions that ensure
user-centered access to resources.

Responsibilities include: Provides recommendations on the types of
metadata required for effective access to electronic publications,
tracking developments on metadata standards, and facilitates access to
resources through cataloging for a variety of formats.  Performs original
cataloging, and participates in training and support activities for
cataloging staff.   Actively participates in the library's research and
development efforts and in local and national discussions relating to
providing access, retrieval, and management of collections regardless of
format.

Required: ALA-accredited MLS.  Knowledge of AACR2, MARC, LCSH and a
national bibliographic utility such as OCLC. Hands-on experience with
cataloging electronic resources.  Experience with emerging metadata
schemas such as Dublin Core.  Experience with web page development.
Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.   Ability
to work independently and in teams.

Preferred: Experience with Innovative Interfaces library information
system. Experience with relational databases and Web database content
brokers.  Experience with XML coding technologies and database
development.

volumes and a staff of 24 professionals and 45 support staff. The library
uses the INNOPAC integrated system and has developed Mariner, a digital
library.  It is a Tri-State Regional Depository and a full patent
depository.

These are two 12-month, full-time positions with excellent benefits
