Duties and Responsibilities:
The CONSER Office coordinates Harvards participation in CONSER (Cooperative
Online Serials), a national program which cooperatively catalogs serial
publications using standards and guidelines agreed on by program
participants. The office provides training and interpretation of national
cataloging policy, authenticates records contributed by Harvard to the
program, and, for some libraries, provides cataloging, holdings, and name
authority work.
Under the supervision of the Head of the CONSER Office and working with
direction from the Serials Cataloger, works with prepared copy to catalog
serial records in the Online Union Catalog (OCLC) and in Harvards online
catalog (HOLLIS). Performs a variety of duties involving serial records,
including basic editing and maintenance of CONSER records in all formats
and languages. Searches HOLLIS and OCLC for cataloging copy and authority
records. May perform supervised original cataloging and classification of
straightforward materials. Completes necessary holdings record creation and
maintenance work. Enters prepared authority work to the National Authority
File and in HOLLIS according to NACO program standards. Gathers and reports
University-wide serials cataloging statistics. Communicates with staff
working with serial publications at many varied Harvard libraries. NOTE:
This position requires a minimum of 2 hours per day working on the
computer. Part-time position funded for 17.5 hours/week.
Required Education:
Bachelors degree preferred. Experience in using an online catalog system in
an academic library setting highly desirable. Familiarity with MARC format
and OCLC preferred. Demonstrated competency in keyboarding/typing required.
Must be able to work easily with both English and non-English language
materials. Must be flexible, versatile, detail oriented, and able to work
cooperatively in a small team environment. Must have excellent
organizational and interpersonal skills and be able to perform complicated,
routine tasks with minimal supervision.
