Title: Innovations in E-Journals Management

Come and hear about workflow innovations created by acquisitions,
cataloging, serials and information technology departments to meet the
needs of their libraries created by the new e-resources available in the
market place. Librarians have had to make changes to the way their staff
and their technologies are used to make the workflow in their departments
work better to supply service and information to faculty and users about
new titles and e-resources. We have four innovators discussing the new
structure in their departments to handle the new information flow created
by e-resources and e-journals.

Innovators: Emily McElroy (Head of Acquisitions, New York University),
Patricia A. Loghry (Resource and Collections Special Projects Librarian,
University of Notre Dame), Robert Alan (Head, Serials and Acquisitions
Services, Pennsylvania State University), and Norm Medeiros (Coordinator,
Bibliographic and Digital Services, Haverford College).

Emily will provide a brief overview of the difficulties facing librarians
in managing electronic resources. In addition, she will discuss some of
the approaches she has taken in analyzing cross departmental workflow and
the challenges and opportunities that resulted in these studies.

Patricia will discuss the licensing environment at the University of Notre
Dame. After a brief discussion of the different licensing participants,
she will discuss current workflows and recent changes. She will conclude
with some possible trends she feels are developing as well as some proposed
management solutions.

Robert will focus on the impact of electronic resource management on
serials acquisitions staffing. The demarcation between print and online
has become blurred over the past several years. What are some of the
changes that impact the way we now need to manage serials (both print and
online)? How to overcome resistance from staff who may not be ready or
willing to transition from print to online. What skills sets, if any,
associated with core tasks are transferable to electronic resources
management? These are important issues that need to be addressed as staff
transition from print to electronic resource management.

Norm will describe migration from two home-grown e-resources management
systems to a commercial product; outsourcing of select e-resource tasks to
a serial agent; and creation of a model license for distribution to
licensors for the Tri-College Consortium of Bryn Mawr, Haverford, and
Swarthmore Colleges.

There will be time for discussion and questions. Please come and
participate in the program.
