VACANCY NOTICE ALBANY, NEW YORK Director of University Libraries and Dean of Library Faculty The University at Albany, State University of New York, invites nominations and applications for the position of Director of University Libraries and Dean of Library Faculty. The University seeks an experienced, innovative and dynamic leader to administer and manage the University Libraries and function as an officer of the University, working with the Provost, Deans, and policymaking councils to articulate plans for serving the educational and research needs of Albany's students and faculty. Albany's University Libraries rank among the top 100 research libraries in the United States with a total collection of 2.1 million volumes and include the University Library on the main campus, the New Library, opened in September 1999, which houses the Science Library, the M. E. Grenander Department of Special Collections and Archives, and the Library's Preservation Department, the Thomas E. Dewey Graduate Library for Public Affairs and Policy on the downtown campus, and the Library Storage Center, a closed library storage facility with a capacity of approximately 600,000 volumes. The Dean and Director reports to the Provost and is a member of the Deans' Council. This 12-month position is available August 1, 2005. Successful applicants are required to possess an advanced degree in library science from an ALA-accredited or equivalent program, and have a record of scholarship and accomplishment appropriate to appointment at Librarian (the equivalent rank of Professor.) Applicants must also have a minimum of five years' experience in a research library setting. Also required is a record of leadership, management and interpersonal skills as well as a strong record of professional achievement - especially experience in planning and applying contemporary and emerging technologies in higher education settings. Applicants are required to have a successful record of leadership in planning, developing, and managing library programs and services. He/she must demonstrate a clear understanding of the critical role of the library in a research university as well as the evolving nature of scholarly communication and publishing. He/she must possess a vision of research library services in the 21st century and the skills to advocate for and communicate that vision. Applicants must also demonstrate a commitment to equal opportunity and affirmative action and an ability to work with culturally diverse populations The preferred candidate will have experience at the director or associate/assistant director level in research libraries. He/she should also be able to demonstrate responsiveness to human resource issues and have experience in fundraising and donor relations. Also preferred is a record of successful collaboration with learning, teaching and information technology services and experience in creative management of fiscal resources and plans. It contains several electronic library classrooms and laboratories, a 60 seat computer user room, a large electronic reference area, and an Interactive Media Center. The New Library, opened in September 1999, also on the main campus adds 143,000 net square feet of space to the University Libraries and houses a technologically advanced, 400,000 volume Science Library, the M. E. Grenander Department of Special Collections and Archives, and the Library's Preservation Department. It is adjacent to the Library Storage Center, a closed library storage facility with a capacity of approximately 800,000 volumes. The Thomas E. Dewey Graduate Library for Public Affairs and Policy on the downtown campus contains approximately 130,000 volumes and serves the graduate schools of Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Social Welfare and Information Science and Policy located on that campus. The University Libraries use the Ex Libris ALEPH system and are fully automated. Minerva, the Libraries' online catalog contains information on all cataloged holdings and is Internet accessible.
