Position Announcement
HEAD CATALOGER
The Ingalls Library of the Cleveland Museum of Art invites applications
from motivated and innovative librarians to provide leadership and
expertise for cataloging and related activities. The Ingalls Library is
committed to providing access to all types of materials in conformance
with national standards. The Head Cataloger manages a department
comprised of two librarians and two para-professional staff. The
department is responsible for original and copy cataloging of print and
non-print materials, including electronic resources and serials in all
languages; authority control; database maintenance; and coordination of
cataloging policy. Cataloging is performed on RLIN for inclusion in the
local Dynix system. The department is a NACO contributor through the
ArtNACO funnel project. The Head Cataloger is responsible for
maintaining a current and thorough knowledge of all national and
international cataloging standards and works closely with Systems,
Technical Services and Public Services in developing policies and
practices for the online catalog. The position is a member of the
library senior staff and serves as the liaison to the Research Libraries
Group, the ArtNACO funnel project and to the Library of Congress. The
Head Cataloger also provides scheduled reference service. This position
will be heavily involved in the selection and implementation of a new
library system and in the planning for a move into a new facility.
The Ingalls Library is a nationally recognized art reference library
(including image library and museum archives). Founded in 1916, the
library contains approximately 300,000 titles, including journals,
80,000 auction catalogues, and 21,000 clipping files. The image library
contains approximately 475,000 slides, 50,000 digital images, and
6,000,000 photographs of works of art and architecture, including
individual photographs and microfiche.
Requirements: Master’s degree from an ALA accredited program; five years
related experience and/or training, preferably in a research library, or
equivalent combination of education and experience; working knowledge of
at least one European language, preferably Italian, French, German or
Dutch; familiarity with cataloging principles and tools including AACR2
Rev. ed., LCSH, MARC21 formats and LCCN; demonstrated skills in
management, supervision and training; familiarity with standard
reference tools in the field of art history; flexibility and the ability
to work both independently and collaboratively in a rapidly changing
environment.
Desirable Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from a four-year
college or university in art history; experience with RLIN; NACO
experience; experience cataloging a variety of types and formats of
materials; project management; outsourcing; and policy development.
Position available: January 1, 2005. Salary commensurate with
qualifications and experience. The position includes a competitive,
