For additional information on the Yale University Library, please visit the Library's Web site at: _http://www.library.yale.edu/_. *RESPONSIBILITIES *Under the direction of the Catalog Management Librarian, the Assistant Catalog Management Librarian manages and monitors the progress of the serials retrospective conversion project; supervises and trains staff in a full range of problem resolution procedures for serial record conversion; improve and document the procedures for recon and other catalog maintenance activities; perform original cataloging entailed by the current recon and routine catalog maintenance processes; and identifies and resolves problems associated with the bibliographic and holdings records in ORBIS, the Library's integrated bibliographic database. The incumbent also designs and implements projects to load MARC and other types of metadata records from a variety of sources, including the vendor supplied records and the records created through different Yale digital initiatives. Ensures all loaded records are in accordance with national and local standards and in compliance with the vendors’ contractual requirements. Identifies and resolves issues related to the maintenance and quality control for records representing digital resources. Plans on and develops projects to provide access to materials in the unlocking collections. Participate in and facilitate the library-wide serial holdings reconciliation projects. Assists the team leader in monitoring the productivity and quality of work undertaken by the Catalog Management Team. Works on other catalog management projects as required. Collaborates with catalog librarians and other Library staff to establish, document, promote, and monitor adherence to local policies and procedures for bibliographic and metadata maintenance, retrospective conversion, and other activities that affect the library’s integrated library system. Keeps abreast of the current trends and best practices for bibliographic and metadata services in the field. The incumbent also serves on library committees, participates in library-wide programs and activities, and is expected to be active professionally. *QUALIFICATIONS *Master's Degree from an ALA-accredited library science program and a minimum of two years of professional library experience in cataloging serials, preferably in an academic or research library. Strong reading knowledge of at least one European language. Sound knowledge of AACR2, Library of Congress rule interpretations, Library of Congress subject analysis, CONSER standards, MARC21, and ANSI/NISO Z39.71. Working familiarity with OCLC and/or RLIN. Experience cataloging in an integrated library system, with Endeavor’s Voyager preferred. Knowledge of current trends and best practices in cataloging and metadata services. Demonstrated supervisory and staff training experience. Strong analytical and problem solving skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Proficient computer skills, including experience with personal computer hardware and software as needed to perform library functions. Excellent organizational skills, accuracy, and attention to detail. Demonstrated ability to work well independently and with others in a rapidly changing and demanding environment. Preference is given to candidates with experience in cataloging electronic materials and/or managing library projects.
