I would like to echo Rick's comments and suggest some
people might want to take a look at the OCLC environmental
scan document or its executive summary.  They are available

I have been reading them as a part of our staff
reorganization.  The document is the result of a
global survey of our environment, students, faculty and
society in general.  There are many thought provoking
comments I was forced to reread and think about.
