Preservation Librarian

Rice University, a private university, is seeking a versatile, energetic
Preservation Librarian who will both lead Fondren Library's excellent
current preservation services and help it develop new services to meet
evolving needs.  In addition to managing binding, in-house repair, and book
labeling operations, the Preservation Librarian maintains an active program
of education and training for the library staff and public users, grounded
in thorough current awareness of preservation issues and trends.  Active
participation on library committees and in the library profession is
encouraged.  This librarian reports to the Head of the Database Management
Section in the Technical Services Department.

Fondren Library is a stimulating place to work, where a commitment to

matched by its commitment to maintain the riches of its physical
collections.  A high-density off-campus facility for less-used materials
has opened this year.  Planning for renovation of the main library building
is well underway, with construction projected to begin in 2005.

Responsibilities include:  The Preservation Librarian supervises 4 FTE
responsible for in-house repair, book labeling, and bindery preparation,
providing both administrative support and hands-on assistance as
needed.   The position coordinates preservation education, training, and
procedures for the
library, planning programs, workshops, and exhibits; coordinates disaster
preparedness with assistance from a library-wide team; and plans and
implements various preservation measures.  Responsibilities include
recommending new preservation programs as well as exploring funding
options, including grants.

Required:  an ALA-accredited MLS; familiarity with MARC bibliographic and
holdings formats; experience with an automated library system, Sirsi
preferred; significant experience in library binding and/or serials work;
supervisory experience; awareness of current developments in preservation,
including digital preservation.

Preferred:   knowledge of repair procedures; experience in preservation,
including digitization.

Salary/benefits:   $37,000 minimum, commensurate with experience and
qualifications; no state or local income tax; 21 benefit days; 8 study
days; TIAA/CREF; health and life insurance; and tuition waiver.
