ACRL/NY Symposium Scholarly Communication: Evolution Or Revolution?
Call for Poster Session Proposals
Over the last half-century, pressures from a variety of sources have
resulted in a radical transformation in the way research has been
published and disseminated. These pressures have included enormous
growth in the number of academic journals, increases in the price of
subscriptions, coupled with decreasing library budgets, and the advent
of electronic publication formats, accompanied by publishers' attempts
to exercise control over access to proprietary material. The result has
been a conflict of interest affecting the various stakeholders in the
scholarly community: scholars and researchers, students, libraries and
publishers. The dilemma affecting the entire process of scholarly
communication is the theme of the 2004 ACRL/NY Symposium. The symposium
will take place in New York City at Baruch College on Dec 3rd, 2004. We
invite proposals for poster sessions
that address any issue related to this theme, including, but not
limited to:
The relationship of steep subscription prices to collection management
Alternative publishing models
Responses and initiatives of libraries or library systems
Alternative publishing models and scholars: tenure and promotion
Licensing agreements and the library's mission to facilitate access to
information
Proposals should be submitted electronically and they should be between
100-200 words long. Please send them by July 15th to: Marion Prudlo,
Borough of Manhattan Community College Librarymprudlo@bmcc.cuny.edu
