Job Title. Head of Serials and Assistant Professor
Position Description.
The University of Mississippi Libraries seeks dynamic applicants for the
position of Head of Serials. The position is a twelve-month, tenure
track assistant professor. The Head of Serials reports directly to the
Assistant Dean for Technical Services and Automation.
Qualifications.
Successful candidates must have: an ALA-accredited MLS by date of
appointment; knowledge of, or desire to develop expertise in, print and
online serials; excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Salary
and rank commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Other Qualifications.
Supervisory experience; demonstrated knowledge of print and electronic
serials; demonstrated knowledge of principles of cataloging; work
experience in an academic library. Ability to work effectively as both a
team member and a team leader in a collaborative environment. Excellent
interpersonal and communication skills in order to successfully
contribute to an evolving work situation requiring flexibility and
versatility.
Job Responsibilities.
Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Technical Services and Automation,
the Head of Serials manages the library's serials collection, consisting
of periodicals, newspapers, and databases in all formats. Manages the
overall operation of the Serials unit including claims, binding,
acquisition, cataloging, and check-in. Resolves complex record conflicts
and non-routine problems with the receipt of serials and other
continuations. Trains and supervises staff involved in serials
processing. Prepares management reports and compiles statistics related
to the acquisition, cataloging and use of serials. Works closely with
the Head of Cataloging in day-to-day management of Technical Services,
the library accountant in budget setting, and library information
technology department. Processes renewals, cancellations, and invoices
for serials titles. Responsible for vendor relations and correspondence,
claims, invoicing, and statistics. Coordinates the acquisition of and
access to electronic journals and databases. Works with individual
publishers to establish access to online full text available with print
titles. Responsible for overseeing routine e-serials URL verification.
Performs related duties as needed. Serves on the library management
committee and a small electronic resources team and other teams as
needed. As a faculty member, will work toward fulfilling tenure
requirements.
