ASSISTANT LIBRARIAN

The Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research (SFBR), a private nonprofit
biomedical research institution in San Antonio, Texas, seeks qualified
applicants for the position of Assistant Librarian of the Preston G.
Northrup Memorial Library.  Reporting to the Librarian, the successful
candidate will automate and manage the library’s interlibrary loan and
document delivery activities, develop and manage the library’s homepage on
the SFBR intranet, participate in web-based information resources discovery,
and participate in the library’s instructional programs.

About the Foundation:  The Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research was
established in 1941 as a nonprofit scientific institution by Texas
philanthropist Tom Slick.  Currently, there are more than 70 doctoral-level
scientists leading nearly 180 major research projects targeting such health
concerns as heart disease, diabetes, obesity, cancer, hepatitis, premature
lung disease, osteoporosis, psychiatric disorders, AIDS, malaria, parasitic
infections, and a host of other infectious diseases. Research funding comes
from the NIH, private industry contracts, and philanthropic support. The
Foundation is also the home of the Southwest National Primate Research
Center.  The campus is currently undergoing the most extensive remodeling
and renovation program in its history, including remodeling the library
scheduled for 2004-2005.

About the library:  The library occupies approximately 14,000 square feet in
the Urschel Memorial Research Laboratory.  The library collection includes
approximately 5,000 monographs and 100,000 journal volumes, with
approximately 400 current paid journal subscriptions.  In 2004,
approximately 85% of journal subscriptions will change to online-only
access.  The staff includes the Librarian, Assistant Librarian, and 1.5 FTE
library assistants.  The library uses OCLC and Marcive for bibliographic
information, the Endeavor Voyager System for circulation, acquisitions and
the public catalog, and Ariel, DOCLINE and OCLC for interlibrary loan.
