Barcodes on Journals Feustel, Carol 19 Aug 2003 16:27 UTC

When checking in journals, I use preferably the barcode (with my barcode
reader), or the ISSN to locate the record in our OPAC. The barcode itself
doesn't checkin the issue, just locate the record. I'm seeing a large
reduction in the printing of checkin barcodes on journal issues. At one
time every Elsevier issue we received had them, now 1/3 don't. Some
publishers print them, but hide them inside the issue. Add in the
occasional ones that don't work for added interest. Using the ISSN isn't
always as easy as it sounds. Many of the publishers get their jollies by
burying their ISSN deep inside the issue.

Are others having the same difficulties? If so, could we band together to
request the publishers to put them on? You never know what might happen.
