POSITION: Serials Access Librarian

AVAILABLE: Immediately

DESCRIPTION
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a Serials Access
Librarian to contribute to the redesign of serials access and control,
and to assist with the implementation of management software and
database content for electronic serials collections.  This dynamic,
forward-thinking, and service-oriented librarian will arrive after the
redesign is underway and during the time when the Library is purchasing
a new online system.  The Serials Access Librarian reports to the Head
of Serials Cataloging.

RESPONSIBILITIES
As Access Coordinator for Serials Cataloging Section, the Serials Access
Librarian:

*  Assists in the uniform control of bibliographic information,
holdings, subject access, article-level access, and possible non-MARC
access to titles held in various formats, including the integration of
catalog access with other library finding aids;

*  Assists in planning for conversion of cataloging and holdings data to
new online system;

*  As head of the Serials Information and Binding Unit, works with
Preservation Services to ensure a smooth workflow for addition of
serials and sets to library collections; assesses long-term future of
library-wide serials binding operations in new integrated system;
manages unit consisting of two full-time paraprofessionals and a
half-time Carolina Academic Library Associate (graduate research
assistant);

*  Directs ongoing maintenance of union list data;

*  Works with Acquisitions staff to procure missing serial holdings;

*  Analyzes requirements, plans access, and designs projects for
collections now inaccessible or incompletely cataloged.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required: ALA-accredited MLS; demonstrated successful supervisory
experience; some experience in cataloging using the Anglo-American
Cataloging Rules, Library of Congress classification and subject
headings, MARC21 formats, and automated library systems.  Evidence of
flexibility and of analytical skills to resolve complex problems;
excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills; and reading
knowledge of one or more foreign languages.

Preferred: Familiarity with serials cataloging; awareness of national
and international trends in bibliographic and authority control and
knowledge management; familiarity with established and emerging metadata
standards (TEI, EAD, Dublin Core, etc.); training experience; and the
ability to exercise flexibility and creativity as a leader and manager.

SALARY AND BENEFITS
This is a twelve-month academic librarian appointment; salary is
commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Standard state
benefits of annual leave, sick leave, and State or TIAA-CREF retirement
plan.  Librarians are members of the general faculty.
