Actually, we've just been checking ours in the last year or so, and
patrons (and staff) really appreciate it. They arrive so spottily, it's
nice not to need to dig through the stack of any given title to see if
last Tuesday's has arrived yet.

Stefanie;
About two years ago we quit checking-in all newspapers except those few
that are eventually replaced by microfilm. This was negotiated with the
head of our Current Periodicals Department. As you suggested, checking
in the newspapers is time consuming. Since we implemented this
procedure, I am not aware on one complaint. I say it is the way to go.

I am seriously considering the elimination of newspaper check-in, as it is
a fairly time-consuming process here at ECU. What other libraries have
gone down this road and how was it received by your public services
personnel? Many of these newspapers are available via one or more of our
databases; the more important ones we receive on microfilm for archival
purposes.
Thanks,
Stefanie
