Big bound journals problem Urbanik, Elizabeth 01 Aug 2003 17:20 UTC

This is especially aimed at any of you who use Sirsi WorkFlows, to which we
at MSU have just migrated.

We have a lot of circulating bound serials. Each bound volume gets one
barcode. Thing is, they were bound by year, not by title. Anything that was
in the system before migration was moved over as bound-with items. The first
title in the bound volume became the "parent" and the other titles were
linked to it (getting their own MARC records of course). My problem deals
with titles in the series Research Report by the National Education
Association. As an example, for the year 1965 we'll have five different
titles in that one bound volume. Unfortunately, this particular truckload
didn't get done before migration and now Unicorn won't let me add call
numbers. If, as another example, Pupils day in court (1965) was already
given as the child of Rankings of the states, I can't attach another call
number so as to make Pupils day in court (1966) a parent (because it's the
first title in the bound volume, see?). Other than barcoding every title in
each bound volume (which would solve my problem but create others for public
services) or de-analyzing (is that a word?) the whole thing (which again
would solve my problem but be a disservice to the public), I'm stumped as to
how to solve the problem. If anyone out there has been able to figure out
what I just typed ;) and has some suggestions or can tell me how they
handle(d) the same problem, please let me know!

Thanks in advance,
Elizabeth
