WHAT: "Taming the Electronic Tiger: Effective Management of
Electronic-Resources"
WHERE: San Diego, California
WHEN: Friday, January 9, 2004
WHO: ALA ALCTS Serials Section

        The American Library Association's Association of Library
Collections and Technical Services (ALA ALCTS) Serials Section will once
again sponsor an all-day symposium on managing electronic resources just
prior to ALA MidWinter in San Diego. The title of the symposium, to be
held Friday, January 9, 2004, is "Taming the Electronic Tiger: Effective
Management of Electronic-Resources."

        "Taming the Electronic Tiger" will focus on the management of
electronic resources, examining technical as well as administrative
matters.  The symposium will be relevant to librarians in all kinds and
sizes of libraries and to technical, public services, and collection
development librarians, IT specialists, and library administrators.

PLENARY SESSION speakers are:

Friedemann Weigel (Harrassowitz) will address standards, in particular
the NISO initiative on the exchange of serials subscription information
as it relates to electronic journals.

George Machovec (Colorado Alliance) will speak about linking and third
party services.

Richard Boss (independent library technology consultant) will talk about
ILS solutions for managing e-resources.

Phil Davis (Cornell University) will discuss the management of use
statistics and Project  COUNTER.

Two CONCURRENT BREAKOUT SESSIONS will feature:

Tim Bucknall (University of North Carolina, Greensboro) will speak about
public service issues.

Norm Medeiros (Haverford College) will talk about managing e-resources
in a smaller institution that is part of a consortium.

A VENDOR SHOWCASE will also be included.

appear on the ALCTS website at a later date, probably in mid-to-late
