Project MUSE Job Announcement: Muse Seeks Librarian for Indexing Position
TITLE: Authorities Librarian, Project MUSE
LOCATION: Johns Hopkins University Press, Baltimore, MD
Project Muse is currently recruiting for an Authorities Librarian who
will assist in our efforts to provide the best possible access to Muse
journal articles. The position will join a team of Authorities
Librarians who index Project Muse journal articles according to national
standards and local procedures, solve related problems, undertake
indexing and authorities projects, and assist in documenting procedures.
We're looking for a librarian who would like to apply his or her strong
cataloging skills in an interesting and "non-traditional" environment!
Duties include: Index Project Muse electronic journal articles according
to Library of Congress subject cataloging rules, Library of Congress
name authority rules, and local Indexing rules and procedures; resolve
Indexing and authorities problems; undertake special Indexing/metadata
and name authority work projects; assist in the development of local
indexing and authorities procedures, tools, and resources; assist in
training student indexers and revising their work. Following an initial
training period, the Authorities Librarian is expected to work
independently under the general direction of the supervisor and the
senior Authorities Librarian and collaboratively with the Muse Indexing
and Muse Production staff.
Qualifications: ALA-Accredited MLS Degree; at least one year original
cataloging experience, including the construction of subject headings
using LC subject cataloging rules, and authority work experience;
knowledge of LC name authority work and LC subject cataloging; working
knowledge of AACR2r; reading knowledge of two foreign languages,
preferably western European; experience with national bibliographic
utilities, preferably with OCLC; experience with computer applications
in libraries; strong communication and organization skills; demonstrated
problem-solving skills; ability to prioritize work to ensure that
production deadlines and goals are realized; ability to work both
independently and as part of a team; working knowledge of HTML.
Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of XML and emerging metadata standards.
