Dear colleagues,

The International Coalition on Newspapers (ICON) develops strategies to
preserve and improve access to newspapers from around the world; it is
supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and
housed at the Center for Research Libraries. In addition to ongoing
preservation-microfilming projects, we are moving forward in developing
a dynamic union list of non-U.S. newspapers and holdings, which will
enable researchers to locate newspaper holdings worldwide and help
libraries develop collection and preservation priorities.

An important step toward this goal is to survey institutions regarding
the size, scope, and state of their international newspaper collections.
We've designed a simple survey touching on four main topics, available
as an online form at:

http://www.crl.edu/content/iconsurveyentry.htm

A version of the survey in Microsoft Word format (at
http://www.crl.edu/content/iconsurveymsw.doc) is also available for
those who might want to gather information before copying-and-pasting
into the form.

We'd like libraries to have their institution's most appropriate contact
for non-U.S. newspapers (newspaper or serials librarian, preservation
officer, reference librarian-some questions might require knowledge or
input from several areas) answer as many of the questions as possible
and register their responses by July 25.

In hopes of obtaining a snapshot of international newspaper collections
across North America, we're distributing this survey as broadly as
possible, so there may be some duplication. The results will be
invaluable for ICON's present objectives and future planning, which in
turn will benefit newspaper users and the larger research community.

Please contact me with any questions or problems, and feel free to
forward this to any interested librarians or listservs we might not
catch. Again, many thanks for your participation.
